Status Update

Hello hunters,

Hope you all had a nice Easter break and managed to get some trophies in our Easter event.

Here are some Easter event stats: as many as 2045 players got the first trophy for the Bunny Egg mission, 1689 – the second one for Protect The Motherburrows!, 1732 – the third one for What’s Best For The Colonies and 539 successfully completed the ultra mean Coyote mission. Well done hunters!

In case you missed it, last week theHunter: Primal escaped from Early Access and is now available on Steam as a one-time purchase. If hunting ferocious dinosaurs in a huge, stunning prehistoric world sounds like something you’d enjoy, you should check it out!

Now onto a slightly smaller but equally cool release, yesterday we brought out a sweet new 2-6x32mm slug scope for the community’s all-time favourite Pump Action Shotgun. It’s available now in the theHunter store and people keep telling us it’s pretty rad. Check out the sights on this screenshot from our community member Pittie:

This week we reached a very impressive milestone – 60 000 people liked our Facebook page, which tells us that you like what we do – big thanks for your support, it’s awesome to watch our fan base increasing with giant leaps. We’ve planned some wicked celebratory event this weekend, make sure to check our tomorrow updates or sign up for our newsletter.

We’ve also started working on the non-typical antlers for yet another species in theHunter (and it’s not a rabbit) and some other highly requested content.

Finally, today we’re thrilled to introduce two new members of the Expansive Worlds team, their names are Philipp and … Filip! (Yep, having two Daniels in the squad hasn’t created enough confusion.) On a serious note, the team is growing and we’re really excited about what it means for the future of theHunter and Expansive Worlds. Check the guys’ stories below and give them a warm welcome from the theHunter community.

Philipp

PhilHello Hunters!

My name is Philipp Strecker and I’ve just joined theHunter team as a game designer.

I will be taking a closer look at your hunting patterns, crunching a lot of numbers and learning your feedback to further improve the things you already like and tweak the things you don’t like so much yet.

I have been working in the games industry for the past 5 years and just moved from Berlin to Stockholm to be a part of this outstanding family of players and developers.

In my spare time I like to play video games, football, watch movies, hunt my cat and try not to panic while cooking. Also, I am obsessed with sharks.

You can listen to some musical crimes of mine too – if you are brave enough.

I hope to see you on the hunt soon and talk to you on the forums!

Filip

FilipI’m Filip, the single malt monster born and raised in Borlänge. I’m a 3D-artist and have just started my internship here at Expansive Worlds. I have always been in a creative environment, playing and singing in bands and throwing parties for friends and family. I feel that’s where I belong.

When I was in the fourth grade, I decided that I wanted to get into the gaming industry. As years passed, I realized that I can’t stay in Borlänge if I want to pursue my dream. So, now I am here in  Stockholm. Partly because the game industry is located here, but also so that I could play my video games and spin some vinyls without getting told to go to sleep.

I love video games! Everything from Super Mario to Grand Theft Auto. When you play that game that you been waiting for and hyped up for for years, and it proves to be exactly the way you wanted it to be, that’s a feeling hard to beat!

I got my education at gamedev school Playgroundsquad in the Swedish city of Falun. If I wasn’t sure before, then I knew that creating games and 3D really was my thing.

I’m very happy to be a part of Expansive Worlds and to get the opportunity to work with theHunter!

Cheers!

See you out in the woods and happy hunting!

Status Update

Hello hunters,

It’s time for a status update from us and here is what’s been cooking up here, in one of the darkest corners of the world right now:

Holiday Event update

It looks like many of you have been enjoying the Holiday Event, but there has been a fair amount of negative feedback received, mostly due to the bugs and other issues affecting the event page, scoring etc. We tried to jump on and fix these as soon as they were reported and we hope these issues have not put people off the whole event. Thank you for staying with us throughout the event and lots of other hiccups that have happened during this year! Here’s a small holiday gift from us –  the warm and cozy knitted sweater for long hikes in Hemmeldal. You can get it for free from the store during the next 2 days, hurry up and claim your present.

Movember donation

November is over, and so is our Movember campaign. Our community bought 1624 moustaches which equals $3248 worth of donations. The corresponding amount in Swedish crowns has been transferred to the Movember foundation and will go towards the research of men’s cancer and health issues. Thank you for your contribution everyone, you were great!

Movember

Hooray to our volunteer teams

Once again, we wanted to thank our amazing volunteer moderators, translators and wiki team, over 70 people all together, for the tremendous job they’re doing for the theHunter community, making the game accessible and enjoyable all over the world, keeping the forums a clean and welcoming community where everyone’s opinion is heard and respected, and collecting and storing the bulks of the fine theHunter knowledge for you to become a better player. As a small token of our appreciation, we’ve created these special T-Shirts, so you can recognize them while hunting.

The moderators went on a hunt yesterday wearing their brand new T-Shirts, here are them posing with the albino roe:

If you have passion for theHunter (and some spare time) and want to help the community in any way, you’re welcome to apply to join any of our volunteer teams!

What’s going on with Primal

As we’re approaching the release date of the theHunter’s small but scary brother (we’ve said before Christmas, right?), people are starting to get impatient. So, here is some news for you hunters: it’s been decided that Primal will first be released on December 15th, as an Early Access game on Steam. During the Early Access phase we’ll be collecting feedback from the community and working on additional features and tweaks before the proper, full release, next year. You can read more about our plans regarding Primal on its Store page on Steam – and while you’re on there, be sure to add it to your wish list as well 😉

Happy hunting!

Behind the scenes of theHunter: Primal – Design

We know that there are a lot questions, speculations and general ramblings going on about the upcoming theHunter: Primal game. In order to address at least some of them, we’ll be doing a series of short “behind-the-scenes” interviews with the developers who have been working on the game. Today our game designer Björn is answering some of your questions about the game and world design.

Which dinosaurs are going to be included?

The initial release will contain three classic all stars from the cretaceous period: Utahraptor, a medium sized, cunning predator that hunts in packs. Tyrannosaurus Rex, a brutal 6 ton predator that fears nothing, and last but not least, the lumbering tri-horned herbivore Triceratops. We have plans for additional species as well but we are not willing to discuss these right now as there are still some details to work out.

utahraptor

How much science has been involved in their design? Can you tell a bit about the research you’ve made?

We’ve approached these species as we would any species for theHunter, trying to learn as much about it the real deal as possible and finding ways to incorporate this knowledge into the game design. The result of this is that, unlike others in the entertainment industry (yes, you Hollywood), we’ve decided not to ignore the last 20 years of scientific research, which means that our creatures pack things like feathers and are 100% GMO free…

Of course, with species that went extinct millions of years ago the information on many characteristics is a bit sketchy, so we’ve had to resort to more creative guesses than we’re used too. The research is harder but it also allows us to focus on the characteristics that make sense for the game. For example, in cases where there are several conflicting theories about a specific detail, such as raptor hunting techniques, we can select the one that creates the most interesting (i.e. horrifying) experience for the player.

t-rex_with_feathers

How will the dinosaurs behave?

Each species has a unique behavioural pattern. For example, the T-Rex will more or less charge you on sight while raptors are more cunning and will coordinate attacks as a team. Mr Trihorn, on the other hand, is a herbivore so it will choose flight over fight unless seriously cornered.

Can you tell a bit about the world of Primal?

The game is set on a yet to be discovered exoplanet with the environment mysteriously similar to the Jurassic/Cretaceous period on Earth. We’ve tried to approach the world design with the same amount of scientific detail as we did with our dinosaurs. I believe that this aspect of the game is fairly unique, as you will not only be able to experience realistic prehistoric creatures but also the environment they inhabited. Personally I find walking around in this environment to be a really cool and alien experience, as some species of flora that we take for granted in the present world, such as grass and deciduous trees did not exist back then, when ferns and pines dominated the biosphere.

world

Is it going to be a background story?

The lore of the game is something that we want players to discover themselves as they explore the world, the only thing I can say right now is that it is a very hostile and brutal world that very few venture to by a choice of their own and that dinosaurs may not be the only threat you’ll have to worry about…
