Status Update

Hello hunters,

Time for our weekly status update. We’ve got lots of news for you in this one, so read on and let us know what you think in the discussion thread.

The new year has started with three new team members joining the fold. You can find more info about Morris, Dennis and Anna below. Make sure to read their intros and say hello, they are a cool bunch!

Improvements for guest hunters

So, as luck would have it, over the last weekend the 12GA single shot shotgun suddenly became free. It was a mistake on our part and we apologize for the confusion. To clear the things up a bit, this was part of a bigger update that went live prematurely. The upcoming update has been based on a lot of feedback we’ve received and is a part of our effort to make the theHunter experience more enjoyable for our guest players.
2016_jan_free_stuff_1What will happen:

  1. The 12GA single shot shotgun (now available for both em$ and gm$) will be given out for free (all three types of 12GA ammo will automatically replenish in the same way as .243 ammo). This variety of ammo will make it possible to hunt all current species in the game, except bison.
  2. Whitetail Deer and Pheasant will become free to hunt, together with our old buddies rabbits and hares), whereas Mule Deer will become a “premium” animal (huntable only with a membership or a license). Tutorials and missions will be adapted accordingly. This change will allow guest players to hunt in more reserves  (those which contain Whitetail) with more diversity (upland fowl).

To whet your appetite for this upcoming change, we’ve added some very special rare pheasants to Hirschfelden and Logger’s Point. Go and find some!

2015_01_RarePheasant
Update for Windows XP users

We’ve been digging into the issue affecting Windows XP which makes it impossible for some players to play the game and, as we are still struggling to pinpoint the problem and, taken into account fact that support for Windows XP will cease in one and a half months, we had to take the tough decision not to spend any more resources on trying to solve the problem. We sincerely apologize to everyone affected. You can of course apply for a refund or a membership transfer right away (see the details here). We learned a lot from this lesson and we will do our absolute best not to let something like happen again in the future.

We’ve prepared detailed instructions on the next steps for our players who still use Windows XP or Vista. Please make sure to read through them carefully here. We’ve tried to tackle all possible scenarios and we hope that no one will feel left out. If you do, please let us know and we’ll look into your particular case on an individual basis.

Something old and something new, on something blue

On a final note, here’s some major things we’ve been working on in the first weeks of January. Our backend guys have been tinkering with the move of our forum and wiki to a new server (there will most likely be downtime for these services which will be announced later), our programmers have been fixing old bugs and almost the entire team has been working on something new –  a sixth species for Whiterime Ridge! It was one of the most popular animals in our latest survey and we are planning to release it after an open beta, similar to what we did with the ducks which was incredibly successful. Check back for more news on that later!

Meet Anna, Morris and Dennis

Anna

anna1Hiya,

My name is Anna Bouveng and I joined theHunter team a couple of weeks ago as an Executive Producer. I will be developing and growing theHunter as a franchise – looking at our existing games, optimising and evolving them but also deciding where we go next. Despite a more top-line approach I still work closely with the dev teams to ensure that we are making the right decisions and working on things that you (hopefully) want. 🙂

Prior to joining Expansive Worlds I was at Spotify but have also spent 4 years at EA/DICE where I worked as a Marketing Manager on games like Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield 4, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst and other fun projects.

I’m a gamer at heart and also did some programming way back when, though I leave that to the pros these days. My ‘passion for gaming’ started at the age of 5 on my SV-328, then the NES came and change my life with Super Mario Bros (yes, it’s my fave game and I still have my old NES plugged in at home). Gaming is part of my DNA and even though I’m new to theHunter I look forward to giving it a good go! I already learnt that the Battlefield run-and-gun approach does not seem to be the right way to get close to our gorgeous animals, but I’m getting there. 😀

Apart from my job I like to play games (currently a lot of LoL and Tomb Raider), read books, watch good action movies (and sometimes bad ones as well), solve crossword puzzles and I also workout frequently. I really look forward to working with the fantastic teams here at Expansive Worlds, meet all you players when out touring our reserves or talk to you in the forums.

Game on!

~Anna

Dennis

dennisHello everyone,

My name is Dennis Borg and I am the new QA manager as you might already have read about last week. I have been playing games for a very long time which feels like forever. I started out playing a lot of console games which I did for many years but then I started playing pc games too. When I am not working then I spend my time by playing games, watching movies and series, meeting people and writing. Before I started to work in the gaming industry I spent 1 year in Tokyo studying Japanese and after that I spent 2 years studying game design at PlaygroundSquad. After my education I worked for the company called Paradox Interactive as a QA.

Right now I am working hard to learn everything that is new to me, there is always a lot of things that I want to do and too little time. I am looking forward to get to know everyone much better and make this game much better. Happy hunting!

Morris
morrisHello hunters!

My name is Morris Belfrage and I’ve just started my internship as an animator here at Expansive Worlds.

I’ve been studying game development for quite a while now; first I did three years (bachelor’s degree in Game Development) at Stockholm University and after that I went to Future Games Academy, where I am currently doing my second year – which is meant to be spent at a company as an intern.

Other than games I spend my time reading books (I’m a sucker for fantasy, sci-fi and post-apocalyptic settings) or trying to complete one of my increasing piles of unfinished projects. Currently the project I’m working on is bleaching images onto T-shirts, which I’ve had some mixed results with :/

I’ve been reading a lot on the forums lately and I am really excited to begin working on a game with such an awesome community! Although I am not a real hunter myself, I do my research, and I put a lot of effort in making it as realistic as I can. Hopefully you will enjoy the animations I will make, and if not I hope you will tell me (especially when I animate things incorrectly, so that I can learn from it!) 😀

That’s it from us for today!

Happy hunting!

Status Update

Howdy hunters,

Welcome to a new year at theHunter! The Expansive Worlds squad are back from their holiday breaks and so are our weekly status updates. We’re kicking off the new year by welcoming some new team members. QA manager Dennis, Executive producer Anna and an animation intern Morris. You’ll get to know these guys better next week.

Here are some snippets of what else we’ve been up to so far.

Ask Us Anything

Do you have some questions for us? I imagine many of you do! Here’s a unique chance to receive a reply to a question you’ve always wanted to ask. Our Ask Us Anything is back! Unlike our previous sessions, this time you can direct your questions to the whole team and I’ll do my best to coordinate the team’s response efforts by relaying them to right people. The AUA thread will be open for 5 days, starting at 15:00 CET on Wednesday, January 13. All questions will be moderated and supervised by myself and the moderation team. I’ll do my best to get you the answers to your questions by within a week of the AUA session closing.

Here’s a reminder of our AUA rules:

  • Our Code of Conduct applies
  • No tech support and bugs related questions, as these usually require a thorough personal investigation and we have specific channels for those type of queries (customer support and Bug Reports forum)
  • Try to avoid opinionated questions, eg. ”Why does the new gun suck?”
  • Do not repost your question multiple times
  • All questions may be asked, but not all questions may be answered, although we’ll do my best to reply to everything we can. If I the answer is unknown or can’t be revealed, I’ll let you know. Questions will be answered not necessarily in the order in which they’re posted.

The Ask Us Anything thread is now open

Regarding cheaters

We’ve noticed an increase in the amount of reports on cheaters as well as heated discussions regarding this controversial subject in the community forum. We hate cheaters as much as you do and in accordance with our zero-tolerance approach, they do get banned immediately once we have obtained the necessary proof. However, we want to discourage people from accusing other players publicly and indulging in what can only be described as “witch hunts”. We don’t allow and won’t tolerate such behaviour within our community platforms because we don’t want innocent people to suffer unnecessarily. If you suspect someone of cheating, please file a report at support.thehunter.com and we’ll check all the information provided and, if the case stands, that person will be banned. Thank you for your cooperation assistance, which offers tremendous help in fighting dishonesty within theHunter!

Holiday Event results

Our Holiday event is over and you can find the leaderboard with top 50 here. Congratulations to all the winners, you should by now have received your prizes and trophies. If you haven’t, please contact support at support.thehunter.com and we’ll sort it out as soon as we can.

We’ve also raffled two more revolvers among all the participants and here are the two lucky winners: HaruoRhs gets a Mule and BearsBack gets a Stallion

Missions and competitions

There have been some questions about missing missions and competitions for the newer species. We are planning to add them, it’s just that our game designers have had their plates full over the last few months, so it’s been taking longer to develop them than usual. We hope to be able to release something fun and engaging for you soon.

Downtime over New Year’s eve

We received reports about a lot of players not being able to play for hours during New Year’s eve. Our backend developer Calle has dug into this matter and has advised me that there was a problem with Google Cloud and certain certificates. The problem self-corrected after a couple of hours. Sorry if your New Year’s eve was affected.

Mungo667 and Morpheus visiting Expansive Worlds

And finally, a wee bit belated, but we received a very nice visit back in autumn. Our German community member Mungo667 visited us with his dog Morpheus on his way to hunting in the Swedish municipality of Åsele. Mungo667 met the team, learned about how we work, did a QA session with our game designer Phil and got a theHunter T-shirt for his dog. It was great to have you Mungo667!

Here is the sweet Morpheus rocking his theHunter T-shirt!
Morpheus_THMorpheus_TH_1That’s it from us for today, check back next week for more news from us and don’t forget to ask your question in the Ask Us Anything.

Happy Hunting!

Status Update

Hey hunters,

Welcome to our last status update of 2015!

In this update we’re going to be looking back at the year gone by, and introducing new members of our team!

Let’s sum up 2015!

2015_thehunter_yearThe year has been one of a kind in theHunter’s history. We’ve released a record number of reserves, species and game features, not counting minor pieces of content and fixes. It’s been a great, albeit occasionally bumpy, road and we are so grateful for your continued loyalty, ongoing support, participation in events, sharing of happy and angry posts in the forum and, in general, being the best gaming community out there. We appreciate you very much and we’re looking forward to spending 2016 together with you.

Here are some numbers for everything that has happened in 2015:

  • New reserves – 2
  • New species – 9
  • New game features – 6
  • New weapons – 15
  • New pieces of equipment / scope / lures / consumables – 30
  • New wearables (for a hunter & dog) – 57
  • New missions – 131
  • New competitions – 86
  • Bugs fixed – 210+
  • Special events – 10
  • Community created competitions and prize draws – 44
  • New people joined the community forums – 1 889 (+11%)
  • Social media following increased – 20 261 (+33%)
  • Supports tickets resolved – 14 209
  • Player surveys created and replied to – 3
  • Store Discounts / Sales / Bonus gifts / Special promotions– 70+
  • Free species hunts – 6
  • Open beta – 1

We’ve asked the community and the team about their personal highlights of 2015, and here are some of the answers (with Whiterime Ridge and dogs having won the polls in both camps):

IzDaPat – Community member

1) The quality of work EW’s ‘art department’ has put out. Most notably: fur (finally!), new animals in general, but especially the Bisons’ and Dogs’ 3D models, textures and animations, WRR’s level design and the models and textures of some of the new weapons, e.g. the Bouquetin.

forum_header_12) The social aspect of the game: more awesome people in MP games and on the forum, established groups of friends to hunt with, great discussions and debates on the forum, lots of great ideas and suggestions, more & better community competitions.

Carl-Oscar Löhn – Client programmer

2015_07_dog_trophy_shotI loved the Labrador Retrievers, both as new content and as work experience. Working three programmers on the same thing is really fun.

MonStarHunting – Community member

reverse_draw_crossbowNew Crossbow and increasing weapon/animal achievements (blowing the dust of my parker python).

Xan Williams – Sound designer

Watching the live stream pre-release of Whiterime Ridge and seeing how much the players loved it.

Lawger – Community member

2015_10_hunting_bisonFirst, the bison. I love bovines, and I hope to see them on a temperate map as well. Second, the new ducks, because it was totally unexpected for me and it added a lot of much needed variation to water fowling on RB.

Hannes Rhodin – Producer

theHunter_facebook_header_alaska2015 has been a great year for us and I think we have proven not only to ourselves but also to our players that we can push theHunter into the future with new and existing content. The Labrador Retrievers and Whiterime Ridge are by far my favourite additions to the world of hunters…

And as I look into 2016, I can smell blood on a rocky road…

FR_Bugs – Community member

2015_07_tournament_forumSummer fiesta model event based on missions with several difficulty levels and NT’s release and special missions about them.

Team update

And finally, onto some real life news. In the last couple of months the theHunter team has undergone a number of changes. Amongst the people who are currently working on theHunter you will recognize a bunch of old faces and see some new ones. You will miss a couple of our old colleagues since they have moved on to pastures new, but theHunter force is strong with our team and our passion to bring you an even better game experience is bubbling.

Here‘s the current theHunter team:

  • Hannes Rhodin – Producer

  • Daniel Gutierrez Gustafsson – Lead programmer
  • Carl-Oscar Löhn – Client programmer
  • Josef Sundberg – Client programmer
  • Xan Williams – Sound designer
  • Tomas Lif – 3D artist
  • Sandra Parling – 3D artist
  • Timo Väisänen – 3D artist
  • Frida Thoren – 3D artist
  • Markus Tuomi – 3D artist
  • Calle Gustafsson – Backend programmer
  • Emil Bjurström – Backend programmer
  • Magnus Eckers – Frontend programmer
  • Hampus Linton – Animator
  • Dick Sjöström – Animator
  • David Lucas – Support Manager
  • Maria Fritzell – User Acquisition Manager

Those of you who have been with us long enough have probably noticed that we have a few new team members. Frida Thoren and Timo Väisänen have joined our art team, Josef has strengthened the client programming team, Xan Williams has been working on the sounds and Maria Fritzell took on a new role within Expansive Worlds, user acquisition manager. Here are the intros of the three of them; say hi to the guys and make them feel warm and welcomed.

Maria

mariaHi, my name is Maria and I recently joined the Expansive Worlds team in Stockholm. My job is to try to get new players on board through different marketing activities. The more players we get the more resources we’ll have for further improvements of the game.

I’m originally from Gothenburg on the south west coast of Sweden. After having lived in a few different countries I have now moved back to Sweden and to the beautiful Stockholm. I have yet to explore the city and its surroundings properly, but I have been out in the archipelago where I am planning to spend more time next summer. Travelling is my passion and I’m always on the look-out for new destinations. One of the things I love about theHunter is the stunning scenery and visuals.

Timo

timoHello there,

My name is Timo Väisänen and I’ve joined the team at Expansive Worlds as a graphics artist, building everything from weapons to animals and doing a lot of texture work.

I have been working at Avalanche Studios for over 10 years now, on projects like Just Cause, Mad Max and now for a time on theHunter.

I live in Stockholm and have lived here or around my whole life. I´ve been in the game development business since 1998 when I started as a graphics artist with Crytec that just started back then. We were a group of people from all over the world, working from home and submitting our work to a server in Germany. Only when they got their new offices in Coburg Germany I opted instead to start working at a Swedish company Paradox Entertainment on the games like Europa Universalis and Svea Rike.

My interests are music and playing the guitar. I’m into the Gibson Historics line of guitars and I’m kind of a nerd when it comes to all things guitar gear.

Josef

joesfGreeting everyone!

I’m Josef Sundberg and I recently joined theHunter as a client programmer. As many others on this team I went to The Game Assembly and was in the same class with Danny, I remember we did a text adventure game about a janitor way back in our first year there.

I started at Avalanche Studios as an intern four years ago and have most recently been working on Mad Max as a gameplay programmer with the vehicle combat.

In my spare time I like to play video and board games with friends. I also enjoy watching sci-fi and fantasy tv-shows and reading fantasy novels. And I often go and play badminton with my coworkers.

That’s it from us for today. Please be aware that the team will be on vacations until January 7th 2016, so during that time communication will be scarce. See you all in 2016!

Happy hunting and happy holidays!

Status Update

Howdy hunters,

Time for our status update and here’s what we’ve been up to at Expansive Worlds.

Introducing theHunter: Legends

theHunter_legendsYesterday, together with theHunter community, we beta-launched our new game – theHunter: Legends. Developed by another Stockholm based studio Goo Technologies in collaboration with Expansive Worlds, the game offers a totally different experience from what you’re used to in the EHR, but if you like shooting clay pigeons on Logger’s Point trap shooting range or fancy practicing taking down airborne birds, you’ll definitely enjoy Legends! It is a casual free to play game and you will need to have a Facebook account to play it. The game is still in the beta stage, but we’re super curious to know your thoughts – so go give it a try and share with us your feedback. You can read more about the game and how to join the beta in the dedicated forum thread.

Let’s sum up 2015!

We’re looking back at 2015 in theHunter and charting out the highlights of the year – come and tell us what were your biggest highs and lows in theHunter in 2015 and what hopes you have for 2016.

Happy holidays from theHunter team!

2015_Holiday_glovesThe holiday season is alive and kicking and it’s time for a traditional present from the EW team. Another piece of clothing for your holiday attire? Why not! This year it will be a pair of super snuggly reindeer Mittens, specially designed for handling weapons in cold weather while keeping your hands warm. As always, we want to thank you for staying with us throughout this year and hunting on despite all the bumps we’ve been through. You can grab your pair for free in the store until Monday, December 14th.

Farewell to all the good hunters who left us forever

We’re finishing today on a slightly sad note, as we’ve recently become aware that two brilliant members of theHunter community have left us forever. Game veteran Master Hunter and Manfred3175, an active and loved member of our German community Jagdfreunde. Judging by their friends’ testimonials, both guys were amazing people and will be missed.

This tribute video, made by another member of the German community Pratze as a tribute to Manfred3175, with creator’s permission I would like to dedicate to Master Hunter as well as all those people who became our friends in the game in the forum and who one day have just disappeared and there was no one there to tell us whether they’d gone. We will remember you, thank you for hunting.

Status Update

Hello hunters,

It’s finally December and we’re all slowly getting into the holiday mood. We hope you get a chance to take a stab at our traditional Holiday Event that kicked off two days ago. As usual, there are daily missions, competitions and sales from now until Christmas, December 25. Like it sometimes happens with events of such scale and complexity, we’ve ran into some teething problems at the start, especially with the Secret Santa option, but they’ve all been sorted out now. You can read more about this in our special Holiday Event thread.

Movember_SwedenNovember is over, and so is our Movember event. This year we sold 1574 moustaches, for which we donated 3148 dollars (about 28000 Swedish crowns) to the Movember foundation which will go towards funding research projects focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. Thank you for your support and contributions. Together we’ve helped to change the face of men’s health! And while we are on it, make sure to check the results of the devs’ personal Movember challenge and cast your vote for your favourite moustache of the Expansive Worlds.

reverse_draw_crossbowToday we released one of the most requested weapons of all time. A new crossbow, with a reverse draw! It’s ethical for all species in the game and simply looks wicked. We definitely recommend checking it out.

We want to take this opportunity to announce that in three months, on March 3rd 2016, we’ll end official support for operating systems Windows XP and Vista. The reason is that Microsoft has already stopped supporting XP and is slowly dropping support for Vista. Due to this, those old operating systems carry security risks and significant hurdles for our technical team. Just a disclaimer; the game might still work on Vista and XP after we drop the support for those, however, we cannot guarantee that it will and will not be responsible for game performance.

What it will mean for those of you who still run those operating systems on their computers? We wouldn’t like to lose you from the theHunter community, so we would like to encourage everyone to upgrade to Windows 7 or higher. In fact, if you do this before the end of 2015, we’ll add 30 membership days to your account (in addition to those that you’re entitled to according to our compensation plan as per previous status update). To apply for this incentive, please submit a support ticket.

If upgrading from XP or Vista is not an option for you, and by March 2016 you’ll have more than 1 month of your membership time remaining, you can either transfer your unused membership time to a friend or apply for a monetary refund for the unused membership time (in this event all unused membership days will be removed). We’re going to provide detailed instructions on membership transfer and refunds in a separate post within the next month, so stay tuned. We’re kindly asking you to not create support tickets on those two matters before then as we won’t be able to address them.

A short note to those of you with XP who cannot play the game. We’re still working on the issue and we’ll keep you updated on the progress. We’re sorry for the troubles the decision to end support for XP and Vista might cause to those of you affected, however, as time progresses and technology develops, we need to take such decisions in order to provide the best possible game experience for as many players as possible from all over the world.

That’s it from us for today!

Happy hunting!

Status Update

Hello hunters,

It’s status update time and we want to kick things off with the survey results and prize draw

A couple of weeks ago we ran a player survey focused on Whiterime Ridge and we wanted to share some of the results with you. This has been our most successful survey, with about 11000 players having completed it.

As you can see from the reply chart below, almost 80% respondents are either extremely happy or happy with the release of Whiterime Ridge.

WRR_HappyWe’ve also asked you about your experience and here are the results:

WRR_releaseHere’s how you rated different aspects of Whiterime Ridge on the scale from 1 to 5:

WRR_aspectsThis brings the average score for this reserve to 4.07. In general these results show us that despite the turmoil surrounding the release, we’ve done well and you support us which means a lot. Thank you for your appreciation!

As promised, we’ve randomly picked 5 respondents and awarded them 1000 em$. The lucky ones are: EngeeL, ColoradoKid, Evilworm, SanglierNoir34 and paulieboy1977.

Now onto the promised compensation plan for players who have been experiencing issues since the release of Whiterime Ridge. We’ve divided all affected players into three categories, depending on the seriousness of the issues they’ve experienced:

  1. Couldn’t play the game at all or could play but didn’t get any credit for progress (mostly players with the “Vista” issue whose statistics was not saved).
If you fall into this category you will be compensated with 30 membership days.
  2. Could play the game but experienced serious, game-breaking issues (e.g. game crashes every hunt or every other hunt).
If you fall into this category you will be compensated with 15 membership days.
  3. Could play but have been experiencing minor issues and occasional crashes.
If you fall into this category you have already been compensated with the free .454 El Bisonte and a double XP weekend which will be announced once the issue affecting many XP users is fixed.

If you’ve experienced any of the serious issues which fall into categories 1 or 2, you’ll need to submit a detailed support ticket here, specifying the problems you’ve been experiencing. Please attach a copy of your dxdiag report. Our support manager will look into each particular case and will handle your compensation if you qualify.

Attention XP users who still can’t play the game: We haven’t been able to fix the issue yet but we are continuing to work on it. A statement from our lead programmer Danny:

When dealing with OS related issues, it’s pretty hard to find what the problem really is without being able to test for them. XP as an OS is not supported anymore by Microsoft, which makes things harder. The other problem with such old OSs is the security aspect of it. We cannot install computers with XP or Vista within our organisations network, which (again) makes it even harder to find the issues.

XP users can either wait for the fix and corresponding patch then claim their lost membership days retrospectively once the problem is resolved, or, in case they upgrade to Windows 7 or higher they can apply for compensation and get their lost membership days retrospectively, starting from October 7th.

And last but not least, some people have expressed their disapproval of the fact we’ve been releasing a lot of weapon “reskins” lately, claiming that they’re not needed. So, I wanted to quickly address the matter here. Releasing item variations and increasing the amount of items in the store is not an underhanded tactic on our part. There is no pressure on players to buy all the items we release. Reskins give players more choice, especially new players who may not already own a version of the item in question. To make new items from scratch naturally takes longer, therefore this happens less often than variations of existing items. But without easy-to-implement items, we simply wouldn’t be able to sustain the level of development that currently goes into the game.

That’s it for now.

Happy hunting!

Status Update

Hello hunters,

Welcome to our weekly status update. The open beta has been ongoing for over a week now and due to the great results we’ve decided to continue it for another day. Great job everyone, thanks to your input and efforts we’ve made some good progress.

A lot of the bugs and issues have already been fixed on live, such as spotting and tracking stats not being registered. More fixes will be included in our next patch which will probably be released next week. We continue working on the remaining issues and will keep you updated on our progress. In the meantime, if you are still experiencing the issue with your stats not being registered, please submit a detailed report here.

454_splashNow onto the compensation plan for those turbulent times following the release of Whiterime Ridge. We’ve promised everyone a hard hitting gift – it’s going to be “El Bisonte”, a  new .454 handgun. It will be released with the next patch and will be added to everyone who logs into the game for free starting from the day it is patched (the exact starting date will be announced next week) until December 20th, irrespective whether affected or not affected by the recent issues. Individual compensation for players who have been experiencing game-breaking problems will be announced and given out once we can be sure that those are fixed.

Our Halloween event is now over and 1050 hunters have successfully fought the blood thirsty beast and got the trophy. The missions are hidden now, but you can still finish the ones you’ve activated.

About 10000 players have completed our survey, which is an absolute record so far, thanks for your time and feedback hunters! There is still 1 day left until the survey closes, so if you haven’t had time to complete it, hurry up and have your say. The winners of our em$ draw will be announced in the next status update.

Happy hunting!

Status Update

Hello hunters,

This week’s status update is coming a bit earlier due to the big event that we’re preparing for you tomorrow. A lot of issues that have been persisting since the release of Whiterime Ridge have proven that we are in need of more versatile testing, involving lots of players, different software and hardware. We are working on optimizing our QA and testing procedures as we speak, in the meantime we’ve listened to your feedback regarding inviting the community for testing and want to offer everyone interested to participate in our 2 day long open beta session. The main objectives of this stress-testing session are to test the fixes and collect data regarding game crashes and other issues introduced after the release of Whiterime Ridge which we are still struggling to find a resolution for, and to test the new waterfowl species (no details on this, just go and find out for yourself ;)). If this is successful we are planning to make such open testing events a regular thing.

2015_11_OpenBetaCall to open beta testing

  • The testing will take place on our beta server and will run for 48 hours, starting from tomorrow, November 4th, around 13:00 CET. Please note that you won’t be able to create an account before that.
  • Players will be able to hunt all animals, regardless of whether they are members or not, and will receive 12,000 em$, some waterfowl equipment and warm clothes for testing purposes.
  • Please note that items you buy on our beta server with the aforementioned em$ won’t be transferred to your actual game account.
  • After the end of the open beta your access to the server will be revoked.
  • Testing on beta won’t have any impact on your actual game stats, hunter score, leaderboard positions etc.
  • Because it’s a stress test, server hiccups are likely to happen, so your game could crash or get disconnected, response times might be longer etc.

How to participate in the testing:

  1. Starting from tomorrow, November 4th, 13:00 CET, go to https://www.thehunterbeta.com/ and create a new account.
  2. Download and install the beta game client from Downloads.
  3. Hunt. We would like to ask you to pay special attention to waterfowl hunting (on Rougarou Bayou and Hirschfelden) as well as Whiterime Ridge.

When testing on beta you are likely to see some historical testing data (competitions, leaderboards, players’ names and such). Please disregard that as this is dummy data randomly generated from our live server for testing purposes. There is also a chance that some icons and images are missing from the Beta servers so there is no need to report this.
Please report all your feedback in this thread.

Tell us what you think

thehunter_survey_2015Today we’re launching a new player survey to gather your feedback on Whiterime Ridge and some other stuff, it shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes. It will be open until 13th November noon and we’ll randomly pick 3 people who will receive 1000 em$ from us (don’t forget to add your theHunter name in you want to participate in the draw).

Take the survey

Movember update

Movember started yesterday with 4 new moustaches in the store and we’ve already sold 563! This is great, thank you for your activity for this good cause. This year we are expanding our Movember event with a personal challenge in which our devs will join the global Movember community in growing their moustaches for one month to raise awareness of men’s health. You can track their progress here and you of course are very welcome to join them!

Join the challenge

Last but not least – don’t forget about our ongoing Halloween event, the beast is not going to hunt itself 😉

Hope to see many of you tomorrow during the open beta.

Happy hunting!

Status Update

Hello hunters,

I want to begin with an update regarding the game crashes and issues which many players are experiencing, most notably those running the game on Windows XP and Vista. Our programmers are working flat out to resolve the matter (which has been given the highest priority) but unfortunately it is proving more difficult than we had hoped. It would really help us if you could provide a detailed game crash report in this thread (please make sure to provide all the details we are asking for in the description). We realise it is not the responsibility of the community to assist in this manner, but our aim is to get the situation under control as fast as possible and your cooperation will assist us in doing so. If you are experiencing any other bugs or issues, we have a bug forum for you to report those. Bugs posted in general threads disappear in the midst of thousands of post very quickly, so we are asking you to follow the bug reporting guidelines to help us find and fix the bugs. Thank you very much for your patience and support!

We want to extend our gratitude for the fact people are sticking with theHunter during these turbulent and frustrating times. To show our appreciation we will be giving everyone, regardless of whether your game has been impacted or not, a hard-hitting gift, more on this next week. People who were not able to play the game at all will be compensated on an individual basis at a later point, once the problems are fixed.

Once again, thank you for your continued loyalty and patience. We appreciate it very much.

Halloween event

halloweenDespite the fact some of you are having troubles with the game, we thought that it would be unfair to deprive the rest of the players of the traditional Halloween event. This year’s event consists of a special mission pack with a unique trophy for those who complete all the missions. The event starts today and will run throughout next week, until November 8th. A special Halloween bundle will also be available during this time. Please note that this event was created and implemented by team members who are not involved, and cannot assist in any way, with bug fixing. Good luck!

Movember 2015

logo_movember_smallThis year we’re repeating last year’s success charity event where we, together with our community, joined the Movember movement. This year we’ll be raising funds for cancer research and awareness for men’s health again. Last year we collected $1776 in donations, let’ see whether we can beat this number this time.

In addition to our last year’s moustaches which will become available again, our artists have created another four funky ones – in styles Walrus (on the picture), the Bat, Artisan and Showstopper. Same as last year, they will cost 300 em$ and we will donate $ 2,- for every moustache purchased in our store during November. You can track our progress by the Movember ticker on the theHunter main page. TheHunter Movember campaign will start on Monday, November 2nd, and will run throughout the whole month

Walrus_01If for some reason you don’t want to buy a moustache but still want to take part in this charity event,  here is the link to the Expansive Worlds page on the Movember foundation site, where you can make a donation directly. Money donated via our Movember page will go directly to the foundation.

That’s all for today.

Happy spooky hunting!

Status Update

Hey hunters,

Welcome to our weekly status update.

We start by looking back to the latest highlight, Whiterime Ridge.
The addition of the latest hunting reserve has been a success and well received by players, especially those who were waiting to hunt Bison and the like in cold and solitary lands.
In numbers, there have been more than 175.000 hunts in Whiterime Ridge since its release.
This translates to over 200.000 harvested Bison, 89.000 Sitka Deer, 37.000 Snowshoe Hare and 19.000 Arctic Fox.
That is some pretty good hunting, keep it up!

Although the new reserve has been loved and well received since its release, the game has been plagued with subsequent issues, leaving some of you unable to play theHunter at all.
This is unacceptable and it’s all hands on deck to fix bugs/issues. Some are more complicated than others so bear with us as we sort it out. Full steam ahead.

Our producer Hannes wants to address this situation as well:

Everybody who is affected by these issues will be compensated. Before we can roll out the compensations, we have to fix the issues, get the final picture of the severity as well as the details of the ones affected. We are on it.

Today we have released a second patch with fixes and added tools to collect data on complex issues.

Completed fixes:

  • The Sitka deer now calls audible and correctly
  • Ground haze effect disabled while looking in binoculars and weapon scopes to improve performance
  • Issues related to bait *see below
  • Leaderboards no longer disappear randomly, clicking scores and player names to get to the correct pages
  • Fixed player cold faint sync between clients when ragdoll
  • Lightning issues: lowered specular intensity on models and terrain

In progress:

  • Improve patch download speed
  • Multiplayer connectivity issues
  • Major server stability improvements
  • Added additional logging information to pinpoint complex issues with game server communication

Bear barrels and hog feeders:

The issue causing bear barrels and hog feeders to show an incorrect number in the launcher and in the web has finally been fixed. There was no bait lost as a result of this bug, however, it had a negative impact on gameplay for many bear and pig hunters, so here is the compensation we are offering. Everyone who will visit www.thehunter.com and log in to the game starting from this Friday, October 23th until November 5th, will receive 1000 units of bear bait and 1000 units of hog bait for free.

New object: The Happy Camper Heated Tent

For the ones who want to stick to their beloved outfit in the cold of Whiterime Ridge and sometimes take it too far (or the ones who go for a too refreshing swim), there is something new:

The Happy Camper Heated Tent!

Heated Tent

It will allow you to fast travel to tents after succumbing to hypothermia while providing a fresh look as well. Just be sure to do some push ups before carrying it around for long distances.
You can find it discounted in the store from today.

Finally, we are thankful and really appreciate the communication with you, theHunter community. You remind us what is important, by praising as well as criticizing alike.

All the best,

your theHunter team
