Status Update

Hello Hunters,

Another week passes here at Expansive Worlds and we have still been as hard at work as ever. The next two weeks are looking good and I am pretty confident you will agree.

Tropical Trophy Lodge

interior

We are pleased to present to you the third Trophy Lodge, ‘Tropical’. Needless to say we have drawn inspiration for the style from our most recent reserve, Piccabeen Bay. The layout is brand new and it even has an outdoor balcony, complete with BBQ and greenhouse. As well as all the new stylish additions, the lodge boasts two Full Body Platform mounts and some brand new wall mounts for all Duck and Ptarmigan species.

birdpose_03

The lodge is currently going through some final touches and will be available for purchase soon. If you want to get a first hand look at the new lodge, tune into today’s Lock&Learn at 4pm CET. We will be having a look throughout the lodge before getting into a Multiplayer game, to celebrate the release of the new Discord Server. www.twitch.com/expansiveworlds

Official Discord Server

Discord

This week we launched the official Discord server for both Classic and COTW. We have set it up primarily to allow Hunters to chat together while in game. On top of that people who are looking for other players to hunt with, can now join the Lobby or ‘New hunters’ channels and chat to other people looking for a game. Currently it is voice only, but we will have a look at adding one Text only channel. While we wish it could be open for anyone to post, at this stage we need to protect our users from spam and other NSFW content. But I promise we will look into it and try and get something sorted, we do hear you all 🙂 . If you would like to join click this HERE

I am pleased to introduce Josh, our new Backend/Gameplay Programmer.

“Hey everyone!

My name is Josh and I’m the new Backend/Gameplay Programmer on theHunter: Classic. I’ve wanted to be a game developer ever since I was a kid and I first taught myself how to program by hacking together my own game engine when I was in Highschool.

Before I joined the team, I worked as a gameplay programmer on a game called “Move or Die” and as a web developer for a few small companies before that.

I ultimately decided to move to Stockholm after visiting Sweden last year and falling in love with the country. I’m excited to become a part of your (awesome) community. :)”

WRR and PB Issues

Investigation continues for both of the mentioned issues and we thank everyone for their patience. Once the Piccabeen Bay scoring has been sorted, we will be starting a new season, to give everyone a clean slate to start with again. As soon as we have any news or fixes we will be sure to let everyone know.

Rare and Trophy of the Week

The new weekly social media competitions are going well and it’s great to see so many new people coming into the forums. If you have shot a rare or high scoring animal from this week and want a chance to win, then share them in the correct thread on our forum, don’t forget to mention the score! Rares go into this THREAD and trophy animals into this ONE. We currently don’t have a competition for Non-Typicals, but they go into this THREAD.

This Weeks Winners

Moose227

The ‘Trophy of the Week’ is this huge moose which was shot by Strongbeaver. It has a very nice score of 227.881 and must look amazing in the trophy lodge, congratulations!

Piebalddoe

And the ‘Rare of the Week’ goes to DaveyCockett for this Piebald Blacktail doe! With such a great trophy shot and accompanying story. Rumour has it, apparently he mixed up the Blacktail Urine spray with the Scent Eliminator 😉

Free Rotation

Ptar

This week’s free rotation lets our guest hunters test their skills against all the Ptarmigan species. So load up your favorite Shotgun and go and test those shooting skills.

Best of luck out there and I hope you all have a good weekend!

Hello Hunters,

How are we this week? I managed to get out last weekend and blast some ducks with my real life mate Archie. I was lucky enough to bag a rare Gadwall Male Mallard Hybrid and a new PB Mallard. Not bad considering how rusty I am these days

Mallard

OOOOOO Man man man – man, manly man man…

MMC

With Valentine’s over we kick straight back into another annual event, the ‘Manly Man event’. This event is to commemorate a special day in Russia that was originally referred to as ‘Defender of the Fatherland Day’. But over time has been more colloquially referred to as ‘Men’s day’. You can read more about it HERE. So get out some big guns, throw yourself into the wild and see how you fare against some of the more dangerous species in the game. The event runs over the next four days, with four individual competitions and is jam packed full of sales, a new limited time ‘Manly Bundle’ and we have also pulled the mustaches and our black Ushanka hat out from Doc’s Shed. So no matter what gender you are, get out there, puff your chest out and do it for the fatherland! Here are the very nice trophies you can win yourself!

New Item Release

Item_Release 50 mussleloading pistol3_FB

Some of you might have seen the new .50 Inline Muzzleloading Pistol on our stream last week and witnessed the fire power, it is impressive to say the least. We are also pleased to say we have listened to feedback and we will be releasing a second ammo type, similar to the .45 Saboted round that is available for the .50 Inline Muzzleloader rifle. You can now get your hands on it, and if you haven’t, I highly recommend that you do! You can find out more about it HERE.

If you follow popular meme culture you might have heard of Big Shaq. We have had a debate here in the office this week to decide if this new beast of a pistol fits into the ‘Scrap’, ‘Pap Pap’ or ‘Poom Poom’ category. What do you think?

theHunter Live: Pistols at Noon!

Pistols at noon

Yesterday we started the first of hopefully many live competitions. The four lucky competitors ended up being TheHunterIan, Villkatta, Walster (Walt) and Kevin2106,

When you create a new event like this, the only thing you can do is cross everything that is crossable and hope that it all goes well. theHunter gods had other ideas and we had a very, very slow geese hunting experience, but I guess that’s hunting sometimes! The chat was very lively though and there were lots and lots of ideas coming in on how to get the geese to break and land. We had to make some tweaks on the fly and finished the last hour shooting Ducks. Which by all accounts made for some very challenging game play.

Before I announce the official winners there are some people worth mentioning. These individuals captured the spirit of this community well and if there were prizes for fair play, they would get them! First off, stancomputerhunter and HD_Artworks actually won spots in the competition but for different reasons decided to gift their spot to other individuals, a very nice gesture. Then lastly, the four competitors themselves; without even being prompted, took turns at letting each other pull the trigger first when the bird were coming into the blinds. This sort of spirit is what makes this game and community so special!

The official winners are:

  • In first place, Walser with a total score of 77.3.
  • In second place, Kevin2106 with a score of 62.9.
  • In third place, TheHunterIan with a score of 29.6.
  • In fourth place, Villkatta with a score of 0, she was super unlucky.

Nobody walks away empty handed and everyone gets some very nice prizes. The next one of these events will be held once the camera is fully operational, the possibilities that open up once when this happens, seem almost limitless. A replay of the competition can be watched HERE.

Whiterime Ridge Crashes

Thank you so much for all the information that everyone has provided so far, we are super keen to get this issue squished as we understand how frustrating it is for everyone. If you have information you think might help us get to the bottom of the issue then please head HERE and let us know! We have managed to rule out that it is not due to the recent audio fix that went in. Investigation continues and as soon as we have nailed down the issue, we will patch it, rest assured this is a high priority for us and we are on to it!

Competition Camera

So unfortunately the camera was not quite ready for theHunter Live yesterday. But this has actually turned out to be a good thing and there are other features being added to it. Such as being able to switch between players instantly and variable camera speed control, I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

Community Discord

Next week we will launch our very own official Discord server. This will be great for bringing an already strong community together. It will allow people to find hunting buddies faster and make new hunting friends! As well as provide a place for you and your existing friends to chat together. To control spam and make the place more user friendly, there will be one official text channel that only EW staff and Moderators can post in and will be used for announcements. The rest will be voice only channels and will be available for both COTW and Classic players. It will be self moderated to a degree, if you have issues with another user all you have to do is mute them. More details to come next week.

Albinobr

The ‘Rare of the Week’ is this amzing Albino Brown Bear which was shot by Imperial Jawa. It has a very nice score of 24.764 and must look amazing in the trophy lodge, congratulations!

Dools

And the ‘Trophy of the Week’ goes to dools24 for this huge Alpine Ibex. It has an impressive score of 283, great stuff!

Free Rotation

BlackGriz

This week’s free rotation lets our guest hunters test their skills against Black Bears and Grizzly Bears. Both will require hunters to be on top of their game.

Best of luck out there and I hope you all have a good weekend!

New Live Competition: Pistols at Noon!

As I mentioned last week we are launching our very first Live contest that will be held on Twitch. I have some more great news to share with you all, the team have been hard at work and have developed an in-game camera that I can use to film the competition. For obvious reasons it is only available to Staff accounts, it makes me invisible to the players and animals will not spook. This should make for some very exciting footage and Graham and I will be doing our best impression of some ESPN commentators.

The winners are drawn next week on Tuesday at Noon, so you still have lots of time to get yourself entered. For more details and how to enter the competition, please head HERE.

Albino Ambition

Today signals the end of the competition. It has run for the last 4 weeks and there have been lots of amazing albinos shot. Thanks to everyone who entered, we might even run a similar event in the future. To have a look at the competition and how it ended up click HERE.

The final week’s winner is Paqer for this very nice Moose with a score of 154.348, congratulations!

Hello Hunters,

How are we all this week? Good, I hope!

We have another full Status Update this week, so grab a cuppa, put your feet up and have a read!

What is that Smell?

splashscreen_Item_Release_Rusa spray

So as promised, yesterday we released new scent sprays for both Sambar and Rusa deer. These will now help hunters to secure these two illusive species, Sambar more so than ever! You can purchase them here, we look forward to seeing everyones results. Today’s stream will be focused on these sprays, come watch today at 4pm CET to see how they work. Watch Here.

So many Goats, so many competitions!

Goat_competitions_3

So as some of you will have seen, we announced a winner for the Feral Goat competitions last week, who was not originally announced as a winner.

We have to put our hand up here and say sorry, a mistake on our end. Basically Treedweller had the most complete, well-rounded set of challenges as a standalone entry, but the other winners had some of the most interesting individual challenges. The decision was taken to incorporate more people from the community and split it amongst multiple people rather than award a prize to a single person – but we were really impressed with all six entries. Then when it came to preparing the competitions for players, due to a miscommunication, Treedweller’s complete competition set was created. But we have actually come up with a solution that will see everyone with a big grin on their faces, including the wider community.

Today we have included the other 5 winners competitions as well, yes that’s right! This means that there will now be a total of 12 unique competitions. This means there is now more chance for you guys to get some of those sweet em$ and string some interesting Goat hunts together!

Patrick has been hard at work getting the other winning entries implemented and today they go into the competition rotation as well.

Get lemons -> Make lemonade.

Congratulations to Madrugo, TheSheWolf, Pittie, TR_GorkemCanakcili, KingOmar and Treedweller.

Smarter Than The Average Bear?

There has been some confusion over recent bear changes, mainly I think it is around peoples’ expectations of how they think they should be. So let me try to explain what has changed with them.

The original Grizzlies and Polar Bears were missing some stages in the AI cycle, which is where all the confusion starts.

Let me explain. In their original super aggressive state, they were missing a stage in their AI, the ‘look and listen’ stage that happens when you get within range of an animal. Because the bear was not running any ‘surrounding checks’, this was allowing users to run straight up to the bear. Then once you got up to the bear there was the chance that it charged you or fled.

We added the ‘look and listen’ stage back to their AI, but they had an issue which meant as soon as you went into the ‘look and listen’ range they automatically went to ‘fleeing’, which is why nobody could get close to them.

So now the bears are alert, like they should be in real life. But like all animals in the game you can now stalk them and if you get close enough to them, they will either attack or flee. So they are actually working as originally intended now and not too easy to kill like they were on release.

But if we now compare bear species, Grizzly and Polar Bear are much more likely to charge rather than flee than the other species. If you want to do tests I would try walking around, not running. Like mentioned in the last status update Grizzly Bears are not as aggressive as people think and only attack when startled or they have cubs, but if you run around in the woods and they hear you, they will avoid you.

I hope this helps to explain what was fixed and why it has been fixed. It is now finally working as intended. It should be fun working out how to hunt them now. I hope you enjoy the added realism.

Albino Ambition

Today we enter week three of this competition. But this week’s winner is Fegenhampe for this amazing Whitetail that actually makes the Super Rares Gallery, scoring 175.707. Congratulations.

WT

But I also must congratulate Jonatas_Vitor for this amazing Moose, It must look amazing in your trophy lodge.

Game Update

Hello Hunters,

Please see the changes for today’s Game Update below:

Changes:

  • Grizzly Bears and Polar Bears should now go into a watching/listening state when the player comes within close proximity. Before, this state was skipped and bears proceeded to flee immediately. This fix results in them becoming less spooky.
  • Tweaked Grizzly Bears and Polar Bears to be slightly more aggressive than Brown and Black Bears.
  • Now when setting aim/look sensitivity to the lowest value on the slider, it should not completely stop the player from looking around/aiming.

Bug fixes:

  • Fix to audio bug in Whiterime Ridge. This fix includes an additional audio setting under Game Settings in the Launcher. Players experiencing this audio bug can enable the Extended Audio Memory option prior to launching to correct the issue. Those not experiencing the issue should leave the option unenabled.
  • Fix for ‘Illegally Blonde’ mission not spawning the right variant of Black Bear.
  • Newly taxidermied Albino Kangaroos will now have Albino fur in the Trophy Lodge, instead of having common fur. Unfortunately this won’t fix the issue for players that already have taxidermied Albino Kangaroos.
  • Fixed Sneaky 3D Summer Field Hunting Backpack. Model should now show up on players backs.
  • Timbergold Trail environment sound issue fixed and adjusted mix.
  • Fixed Piccabeen Bay name displaying incorrectly on loading screen.
  • General localization fixes.

Launcher 812

Changes:

  • Added Extended Audio Memory option setting under Game Settings in the Launcher. The Extended Audio Memory option can be enabled prior to launching the game for players experiencing audio memory issues.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed issue with Start and Tutorial buttons not being enabled after full game download.

Status Update

Hello Hunters,

How has everyone’s week gone? Anyone managed to bag any good animals? I managed to get a new PB Mule Deer which scored 243, it was a nice surprise as I seem to be lucky with the rares, but never any top scoring animals. Anyway, enough about me, let’s take a look at what’s happening with the game this week!

Was that a cannon I heard?

New .405 Lever Action Rifle

405

A lot of people have been requesting a new rifle to deal with the stronger animals in the game and we have just released a classic that perfectly fits the bill!

The .405 is a classic rifle and traditionally it never had any optics. This is because of where the breach is located, how it is loaded and how the shells are ejected. So to keep it as true to the real gun, currently there are no scopes for it. In saying that, it is designed for the biggest of animals and these tend to present a much bigger target and are generally easier to get close to. I took it to the range before and can hit the bulls eye at 100m with ease, I might have also shot a few clays with it 😉 There is a great discussion taking place at the moment on our forums, take part Here.

New Competition: .405 Big Medicine Gun

405_competitions

As traditional with any new weapon release, we have a competition to complement it. This time it’s a combination of your heaviest Moose, Banteng and Water Buffalo. More details can be found Here.

What’s on the Lathe?

We have been working on some new competition ideas here at EW and the first one that I can hint at is our first ever live eSport-style event, where people will compete live on stream for a currently unreleased in-game item. If this sounds like a bit of fun to you, keep an eye on the forums next week for your chance to participate.

The WRR sound issue is nearly fixed and all going to plan you can expect it in a patch very soon, we understand how frustrating it is and we appreciate everyone’s patience.

We are still working on individualising the bear behaviour, more research is being done and then the programing will be tweaked to get their behaviour as true to real life as possible. Surprisingly enough Grizzly bears are more cautious than people (including myself) tend to think.

Albino Ambition

The new albino textures appear to have gone down a treat with everyone and the community competition is still running. This week’s winner is TalonLePineapple for this very nicely composed trophy shot.

albino wt

But I also must congratulate Gaffi for this lovely photo as well, it was very hard to pick between the two.

Albino wt2

A little introduction from Silvia,

Hej Hunters! My name is Silvia Scalisi and I am a FullStack Developer working with the theHunter Classic in the Stockholm office. As a FullStack Developer, my goal is to build robust servers and appealing user interface for our players.

On the personal side, I am a Sicilian girl who moved to northern Europe two years ago. I enjoy cold temperatures so Sweden is a perfect fit for me 🙂 I love playing retro games (Tetris is my favourite), going to Zumba classes, eating and preparing Japanese food and spending a lot of time laughing with friends! I am really happy to have joined the team. Ciao!

Free Rotation

This week’s free rotation lets our guest hunters have a shot at Brown Bear and Moose. So load up your bear barrels and bring out the heavier guns this week!

Best of luck out there and I hope you all have a good weekend!
